The legendary spirit of community generosity, cooperation and service are about to be unveiled at a special joint “Civic Showcase” on Saturday, September 17th from 1 to 3 pm. at the meeting hall of the American Legion Kiltonic Post #72, located off the Town Green at 66 Main Street in Southington.
Members of local community non-profit organizations and all residents will have an opportunity to meet and greet representatives of some seventeen civic and community service groups.
The Showcase offers an opportunity to explore what services each of these enterprises actually provide; whose needs in the community they serve; and where citizens might discover a place that appeals to their own interest in becoming a volunteer.
“The idea arose in conversations between members of several organizations as early as last May.” said Wayne Stanforth, who has taken a leadership role in developing the concept. Well-known in the community for his service, Stanforth is currently vice president of the Lions Club and a former member of the Town of Southington Board of Finance. Internet research revealed that there are groups in other places doing something like this but none apparently nearby.
Collaborators in planning include Steve McCarty, Commander of the local American Legion Post. “This initiative will enable residents to learn more about volunteer opportunities and how to get involved.”, said Town Council Member Dawn Miceli who is helping with publicity fnting UNICO and SoCCA at the Civic Showcase.
“Viewing Southington Talks on Facebook, there definitely seems to be a need for this type of undertaking. People want to be involved in their community but don't know where to start.”, Miceli said.
Among the civic groups showcasing will be the American Legion, Boy Scout Troops 42 and 45, CERT, Early Childhood Collaborative of Southington, Falcons Nest 307, Knights of Columbus Isabella Council 15, Lions Club, Southington Community Cultural Arts, Southington Education Foundation, Southington
Historical Society, Southington Junior Chamber “Jaycees”, Southington Land Conservation Trust, Southington Rotary Club, UNICO, Wolf Central and YMCA.
Along with the positive opportunities for would-be volunteers and the good organizations that need them, this initiative sets up a convenient point of reference, stronger intra-community connections and efficient event coordination opportunities.
With Southington’s legendary spirit of caring generosity, a visit tomorrow is highly recommended.

Frankly, there were a couple in the list of those showcasing on Saturday that I didn't recognize, at least not until I did a little internet research.
What about you? Should your group be included as this group begins its work?
